Medtech recalls cough syrup over microbial contamination concerns

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

Medtech Products Inc., a subsidiary of Prestige Consumer Healthcare Inc., has announced a voluntary recall of five lots of Little Remedies Honey Cough Syrup. The recall is due to the detection of Bacillus cereus and concerns about shelf-stability. Bacillus cereus can cause two types of food-borne illnesses, one resulting in nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps within 1 to 6 hours after consumption, and another causing stomach cramps and diarrhea 8 to 16 hours post-consumption. While generally short-term for healthy individuals, high levels of exposure can be fatal.

The affected products were distributed across the United States through various retailers and online from December 14, 2022, to June 4, 2025. The recall encompasses all lots still within their expiry date. Consumers are advised to stop using the product immediately and consult healthcare providers if they experience any adverse symptoms related to its use.

Medtech will provide reimbursement for consumers who purchased the recalled products. No serious adverse events have been reported so far. Customers with inquiries or refund requests can reach Medtech via email at medicalaffairs@prestigebrands.com, through their website, or by calling (800) 754-8853 during business hours.

Adverse reactions or quality issues with the product can be reported to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online or by mail or fax.

This recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
