Clinton J. Johnson U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma
A Bristow man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his 5-year-old daughter, as announced by U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson. Adam Raymond Mason, aged 34, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge John D. Russell for Second Degree Murder in Indian Country.
U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson stated, "What Mason did to this 5-year-old little girl was inhumane. There will be no first dances for her. She will not have the opportunity to attend college or become a mother herself." He added that the life sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime and ensures public safety.
FBI Oklahoma City Special Agent in Charge Doug Goodwater commented on the case: "The suffering this innocent child endured at the hands of her own father is completely incomprehensible. The defendant deserves every second of the sentence imposed, and more." He commended investigators and prosecutors for their dedication to handling the case.
The incident occurred on August 26, 2020, when deputies from the Creek County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to check on a child's well-being after her mother reported concerns about her staying with Mason. Upon arrival, they discovered a burned body believed to be that of the child.
Mason was found hiding nearby and taken into custody. He claimed he believed his daughter was controlled by witchcraft and admitted to punching her multiple times before setting her on fire at a creek.
Mason is a citizen of the Muscogee Creek Nation and will remain in custody pending transfer to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
The investigation involved multiple agencies including the FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Creek County Sheriff’s Office, and Muscogee Creek Nation Lighthorse Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew P. Cyran prosecuted the case.
