An Ecuadorian national residing in Lawrence has admitted guilt in federal court for unlawfully reentering the United States after deportation. The individual, Carlos Guaico-Bano, 35, was arrested in May 2025 and has pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. U.S. District Court Judge Allison D. Burroughs has scheduled sentencing for September 15, 2025.
Guaico-Bano had been encountered multiple times by Border Patrol in Texas during early 2020 and was returned to Mexico each time due to his lack of legal status. Despite being ordered to appear at removal proceedings on March 10, 2020, he attempted unauthorized entry into the U.S. again and was consequently removed back to Ecuador.
In November 2021, Guaico-Bano was arrested in Lawrence on charges of assault and battery as well as assault with a dangerous weapon. He received an 18-month suspended sentence but was released from custody before immigration authorities could act.
The charge against Guaico-Bano carries a potential sentence of up to two years in prison, one year of supervised release, and a fine up to $250,000. Deportation is likely upon completion of any imposed sentence.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley along with Patricia H. Hyde from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston. Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke A. Goldworm is prosecuting the case.
