The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania has announced the indictment of Gregorio Perez-Canceco, a 42-year-old Mexican national residing in York, Pennsylvania. The federal grand jury indicted him on June 18, 2025, on one count of illegal reentry into the United States.
Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus stated that the indictment alleges Perez-Canceco was previously removed from the U.S. on October 4, 2017, through Hidalgo, Texas. It is further alleged that he was found in the United States without having obtained legal permission to reenter. On May 23, 2025, Perez-Canceco was reportedly encountered in York County, Pennsylvania.
Under federal law, this offense carries a maximum penalty of up to ten years imprisonment, along with potential fines and supervised release. Sentencing will be determined by a judge who will consider applicable federal sentencing statutes and guidelines.
This case falls under Operation Take Back America, an initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at addressing illegal immigration and dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations. The operation combines resources from various task forces including the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
The investigation was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations. Assistant United States Attorney Michael Scalera is handling the prosecution.
It is important to note that indictments are merely allegations; all individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
