House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer addressed the House of Representatives to express his support for House Resolution 519. The resolution condemns recent attacks on Minnesota lawmakers in Brooklyn Park and Champlin, Minnesota, calling for unity and a rejection of political violence.
Chairman Comer's remarks highlighted the tragic events that occurred on June 14th, when State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were ambushed at their home. Both were shot multiple times while defending their daughter. Later that day, Melissa Hortman, former Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives, and her husband Mark were murdered in their residence.
Comer emphasized that these attacks were not random but part of a larger plot targeting public servants and their families across Minnesota. He stated: "Such violence has no place in our country—especially political violence."
He urged his colleagues to condemn these acts and those who seek to harm elected officials regardless of party or ideology. Comer stressed the importance of resolving differences through debate, elections, and constitutional processes rather than violence.
The victims were described as more than politicians; they were community members dedicated to representing constituents' interests. Comer expressed confidence that all Americans should be free from fear due to their beliefs or service.
He also commended law enforcement for capturing the suspect after a 40-hour manhunt: "Their courage and professionalism prevented further loss of life." He concluded by reaffirming commitment to peace and civility in America.
