Mexican national receives federal prison sentence for illegal reentry

A Mexican national has been sentenced for illegally reentering the United States, according to an announcement by Eastern District of Texas Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs.

David Sanchez-Mares, aged 32, and a resident of Longview, admitted guilt to the charge of illegally reentering the country after being deported previously. He received a 46-month federal prison sentence from U.S. District Judge Jeremy D. Kernodle on June 23, 2024.

Court records show that Sanchez-Mares was apprehended in Longview on April 4, 2024, for an unrelated state violation. Further investigation uncovered his prior conviction in the Southern District of Texas for illegal reentry into the United States after deportation in 2018.

This case falls under Operation Take Back America, a national effort utilizing Department of Justice resources to combat illegal immigration and dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), aiming to protect communities from violent crime perpetrators. The operation coordinates efforts from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).

The investigation involved the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Longview Police Department, with prosecution led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Noble.
