Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson announced that Carlos Rene Medina-Ayala, a 48-year-old native of Honduras, has been indicted for illegal reentry into the United States after deportation. The indictment was filed on June 20, 2025, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
According to the indictment, Medina-Ayala was discovered to have reentered the country on June 2, 2025, despite having been deported previously on November 7, 2013. If convicted, he faces up to two years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, one year of supervised release, and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.
Simpson emphasized that an indictment is only a charge and does not establish guilt. The defendant's guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
The Acting U.S. Attorney commended the United States Border Patrol for their investigative work on this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Katherine Kaufman from the General Crimes Unit is leading the prosecution.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at combating illegal immigration and dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations. It integrates resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood.
