Albany man sentenced for firearm possession while serving life term for murder

Willie Green, a 42-year-old resident of Albany, has been sentenced to 63 months in federal prison for unlawful firearm possession. The announcement was made by United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III and Bryan Miller, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF's New York Field Division.

Green previously admitted to possessing a loaded pistol on January 1, 2022, despite a prior felony conviction prohibiting him from doing so. His criminal history includes a murder conviction in 2024 secured by the Albany County District Attorney’s Office. The new sentence will run consecutively with his current state sentence of 25 years-to-life for murder.

United States Attorney Sarcone remarked, “Willie Green cannot serve enough prison time for the crimes he’s committed. He should never get out, and if he is granted parole by New York State, he will be immediately taken to federal prison to start serving his term of imprisonment in this case. Albany is safer if this murderer stays locked up for good.”

ATF Special Agent in Charge Bryan Miller commented, “This sentence reflects our unwavering commitment to holding violent offenders accountable—especially those who continue to possess firearms despite felony convictions. This individual not only admitted to carrying a loaded firearm illegally, but he is also serving a 25-to-life sentence for murder. His actions represent the very threat to public safety that ATF and our law enforcement partners work tirelessly to prevent."

Senior United States District Judge Frederick J. Scullin, Jr., imposed an additional three-year term of supervised release upon Green's release from federal custody.

The case was investigated by the ATF with assistance from the Albany Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikayla Espinosa under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN). PSN aims to reduce violent crime through collaborative efforts between various stakeholders focusing on the most pressing issues and violent offenders within communities.
