NIRSA has announced new recognitions for its sustainability leadership in Ecuador, highlighting an improved Merco ESG Responsibility ranking and recognition from Ypsilom for outstanding environmental and social performance. The announcement was made on the NIRSA news page.
According to NIRSA’s 2024 sustainability report, the company is a founding member of the TUNACONS Foundation. This organization promotes sustainable tuna fishing through non-entangling and biodegradable Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs), strict traceability, and the prohibition of transshipment at sea. These efforts align with global benchmarks such as the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
SeafoodSource reports that five founding members of TUNACONS, including NIRSA, achieved MSC certification for yellowfin tuna in the Eastern Pacific Ocean in 2022. This certification process included the use of biodegradable FADs, onboard observers, and close scientific collaboration.
According to Shrimp Insights, Ecuador remains one of the leading global exporters of shrimp, with NIRSA among the largest suppliers to the U.S. market. In 2023, NIRSA shipped between 4,000 and 7,000 metric tons of shrimp to American buyers, maintaining partnerships with key U.S. distributors.
NIRSA was founded over 60 years ago and is now led by General Manager Roberto Aguirre, who has overseen its growth for 47 years. The company holds over 90% of Ecuador’s domestic seafood market and exports to 35 countries on five continents.
