Labor department renews focus on preventing amputations in manufacturing

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has announced the renewal of its National Emphasis Program on Amputations in Manufacturing Industries. This initiative is focused on preventing amputations within manufacturing workplaces.

The renewed program aims to identify and mitigate hazards that could lead to amputations and other injuries in the manufacturing sector. OSHA will conduct inspections of manufacturing facilities to ensure adherence to safety practices during machine operation, servicing, or maintenance. This includes controlling hazardous energy sources and ensuring machines are properly guarded to prevent amputations. The program targets companies using machinery that poses a risk of amputation.

Key updates in the revised emphasis program include an updated list of North American Industry Code System establishment codes for inclusion in the program, allowing establishments inspected under the NEP in the previous 24 months without reported amputations to be removed from the programmed inspection list, and revisions to OSHA Information Systems coding instructions.

The updated program will replace its predecessor set to end on June 27, 2025, and will remain effective for five years from its commencement date.
