The U.S. Department of Labor has announced the theme for the 80th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) as "Celebrating Value and Talent." This observance, scheduled for October, honors the contributions of workers with disabilities in America and highlights workplace policies that support both employees and employers.
This year's theme is part of the lead-up to America's 250th anniversary in 2026. It aims to emphasize the achievements of Americans with disabilities throughout history. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer stated, "Celebrating America means celebrating the value and talent that all Americans – including people with disabilities – add to our nation’s workplaces and communities." She also reaffirmed the Department's commitment to providing meaningful work opportunities for all individuals.
The recognition began in 1945 when a national week was designated to acknowledge people with physical disabilities. In 1988, Congress officially named it NDEAM, expanding its focus on increasing workforce participation among people with disabilities. The Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), established in 2001, is responsible for selecting and promoting NDEAM's annual theme.
