Mexican national pleads guilty to illegal reentry into United States

Leah B. Foley United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts | Department of Justice

A Mexican national residing in New Bedford has admitted to unlawfully reentering the United States after deportation. Bernardo Lorenzo-Guatemala, aged 38, pleaded guilty on June 24, 2025, to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. He was initially arrested and charged in May 2025.

Lorenzo-Guatemala had previously been deported from the United States on June 4, 2019. After his removal, he returned illegally to the country. Immigration officials discovered his illegal presence following his arrest on July 2, 2024, for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

The charge of unlawful reentry of a deported alien carries a potential sentence of up to ten years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine that could reach $250,000. Upon completion of any sentence imposed, Lorenzo-Guatemala is subject to deportation once again. Sentences are determined by a federal district court judge according to U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.

United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston announced the plea. The Lynn Police Department provided valuable assistance in the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Sullivan from the Criminal Division is prosecuting the matter.
