U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell has voiced her criticism regarding the Trump Administration's decision to relocate over 1,800 employees of the National Science Foundation (NSF) from their headquarters. This move is reportedly intended to facilitate luxury upgrades ordered by Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner.
Senator Cantwell expressed concern about the impact of this displacement on NSF employees, especially in light of proposed budget cuts. "The Trump Administration’s displacement of over 1,800 National Science Foundation employees from its headquarters with no place to go adds insult to injury when the Administration is pushing a 55 percent cut to NSF’s budget," she stated. Cantwell criticized the use of taxpayer money for what she described as unnecessary luxury improvements, emphasizing that funds should instead support scientific research and innovation.
Reports indicate that HUD's plans for the NSF building include several enhancements for Secretary Turner, such as an executive suite on the 19th floor, an executive dining room, reserved parking for five cars, exclusive elevator access, dedicated space for executive assistants on the 18th floor, and potentially a gym for personal use.
Cantwell has pledged to advocate for the protection of NSF workers and ensure investment in their work continues. She underscored her commitment by stating: "We should be investing in our scientists and innovation to make America globally competitive. I will fight to make sure NSF workers are protected and that we invest in their important work."
