Arizona woman sentenced to over nine years for child assault

Starla Shaffer, a 36-year-old resident of Mohave Valley, Arizona, has been sentenced to 118 months in prison. The sentencing was delivered by United States District Judge Diane J. Humetewa on June 25, 2025. Following her prison term, Shaffer will undergo three years of supervised release. She had previously pleaded guilty to the charge of assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

The case details reveal that between January 1 and September 21, 2022, Shaffer assaulted a three-year-old minor under her care. The assaults involved shaking and striking the child on various parts of her body including the face, buttocks, chest, and back. These actions resulted in permanent and life-threatening injuries for the minor victim. Both Shaffer and the victim are members of the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe.

The investigation into this case was conducted by the FBI Phoenix Division’s Lake Havasu office alongside the Fort Mojave Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christina J. Reid-Moore from the District of Arizona managed the prosecution.
