Robert J. "Bob" Troester U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma
RAYMOND IVAN MUNOZ, a 22-year-old from Lawton, Oklahoma, has been sentenced to 84 months in federal prison for illegal firearm possession following a prior misdemeanor domestic violence conviction. U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester announced the sentencing.
A federal Grand Jury indicted Munoz on September 4, 2024, on two counts: being a drug user in possession of a firearm and possessing firearms after a domestic violence conviction. According to public records, Munoz was found by officers from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Police Department on February 14, 2023, unconscious under the influence of drugs with an AK-47 between his legs.
Further investigation revealed that on May 10, 2024, Munoz posted on social media displaying a firearm while driving. Later that day, Lawton Police observed him driving with known suspended license and active warrants. A high-speed chase ensued before he was arrested at his residence where two firearms were found hidden.
Munoz had previously been convicted of domestic assault and battery in Comanche County District Court case number CM-2020-810. He pleaded guilty to Count 2 of the indictment on February 7, 2025.
U.S. District Judge David L. Russell sentenced Munoz to seven years in prison followed by three years of supervised release citing the threat he poses to society and emphasizing public protection.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with local police departments conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Danielle M. Connolly prosecuted the case under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), part of “Operation 922,” focusing on federal crimes linked to domestic violence.
