Rapid City man cleared of firearm possession charge

Alison J. Ramsdell U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the District of South Dakota

A Rapid City man has been acquitted of a firearm charge after a federal jury trial. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell, who stated that the trial concluded on June 25, 2025.

The individual in question, Randy Tail, also known as Randy Tayle or Randy Sierra, is 44 years old. He faced indictment by a federal grand jury in April 2025 for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

The incident leading to the charge occurred during a traffic stop in Rapid City, South Dakota. Tail was found in the passenger seat of a car when law enforcement discovered a firearm inside his backpack located between his feet. Given his previous conviction for an offense carrying more than one year of imprisonment, Tail is barred from possessing firearms.

The case was investigated by the Rapid City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
