Director William K. Marshall, III, and Deputy Director Joshua J. Smith of the Bureau of Prisons have initiated a series of visits to institutions nationwide. These visits, which occur at various times including weekends and off shifts, aim to connect with staff directly and address their concerns.

Director Marshall recently visited FPC Morgantown to engage with staff about their challenges and achievements. Similarly, Deputy Director Smith has been to FMC Lexington and USP McCreary to observe operations and interact with employees.

Last Friday, Director Marshall continued this initiative by visiting FCI Gilmer. He emphasized the importance of firsthand experience in leadership, stating, "I can’t lead from behind a desk. I need to get into the institutions, talk to staff, and see firsthand what’s real and what’s fiction."

During his visit to FPC Morgantown, Director Marshall was impressed by the professionalism of the staff. This experience influenced his decision to reverse a previous order to deactivate the institution. He described it as "a model of what’s possible when dedicated professionals...are given the support they need."

These visits underscore the leadership's commitment to valuing frontline staff voices. Director Marshall highlighted that effective leadership requires presence on-site: "If you want to know what’s really happening, you have to go where the work is being done." The leadership team aims for every employee to feel heard and supported.
