Border Patrol cautions against desert crossings amid rising summer temperatures

As summer temperatures rise, the U.S. Border Patrol is cautioning both the public and those attempting to cross into the United States illegally about the severe risks associated with desert heat. Each year, agents encounter individuals suffering from heat-related illnesses while crossing vast desert areas in extreme temperatures. Common consequences include dehydration, heat stroke, and even death.

Tucson Sector Chief Patrol Agent Sean L. McGoffin stated, “Our desert is relentless this time of year. The heat does not discriminate. It can take the life of anyone—citizen or alien, adult or child—who is not fully prepared for the extreme conditions.”

Border Patrol agents frequently conduct rescue operations for lost or distressed individuals and collaborate with emergency services to provide medical aid. Despite these efforts, there is an increase in deaths due to heat exposure during summer months.

Travelers are advised by the Border Patrol to avoid desert or mountainous terrain during summer, carry enough water, wear suitable clothing and footwear, and contact emergency services if needed.

The agency also warns that smugglers often abandon people in remote areas without necessary supplies or guidance. These criminal organizations mislead vulnerable individuals about potential dangers.

Chief McGoffin emphasized, “Crossing illegally through the desert isn’t just unlawful—it’s deadly. We don’t just want to respond to tragedies—we want to prevent them. Last summer alone, our agents conducted more than 150 rescues. With over 260 medical personnel and more than 3,100 agents in the field, we’re working hard to bring that number down this year.”
