Sioux City man pleads guilty to escape from custody

Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa

A man from Sioux City, Iowa, has pleaded guilty to escaping custody. Curtis Koesters, 45, was convicted on June 30, 2025, in federal court for this offense.

During the plea hearing, Koesters acknowledged that he began pre-release confinement at the Dismas Charities Residential Reentry Center in Sioux City in October 2024. Previously incarcerated for being a felon in possession of a firearm, Koesters failed to return to the center on November 4, 2024, after leaving to seek employment. He was apprehended in December 2024 in Woodbury County, Iowa, and faced several traffic violations.

Sentencing will be scheduled by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand following the preparation of a presentence report. Until then, Koesters remains under the custody of the United States Marshal. He could face up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release post-incarceration. The federal system does not allow parole.
