Rubio meets with Japanese and Korean ministers to enhance trilateral cooperation

Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi and Republic of Korea First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo in Kuala Lumpur. The meeting took place during the ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings, aiming to strengthen the trilateral partnership between the United States, Japan, and South Korea.

According to Spokesperson Tammy Bruce, "The three emphasized that trilateral cooperation remains critical to promoting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific." They reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering defense and deterrence efforts and achieving complete denuclearization of North Korea. Discussions also covered enhancing economic cooperation on shared opportunities such as energy, digital infrastructure, shipbuilding, and strengthening security for critical technologies and supply chains.

The officials welcomed further institutionalization of trilateral collaboration as a means to advance global peace and security. They pledged to continue holding trilateral meetings at all levels.
