Wiet Peeters Farm Products Limited, based in Charing Cross, Ontario, Canada, has issued a recall for its mushroom products due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The affected products include Aunt Mid’s Fresh Sliced Mushrooms 227g, Peeters Mushroom Farm Cremini Sliced 227g, and Peeters Mushroom Farm Thick Slice Mushroom 10lb cardboard.
Listeria monocytogenes is known to cause serious infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. While healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever and nausea, the infection can lead to miscarriages or stillbirths in pregnant women.
The recalled mushrooms were distributed in Michigan and Ohio. The specific products being recalled are:
- Aunt Mid’s Fresh Sliced Mushrooms: Packaged in a 227g flat blue plastic package with UPC 0 33383 676005 and best before date of BEST BEFORE 25JL04.
- Peeters Mushroom Farm Cremini Sliced: Packaged in a 227g flat black plastic package with UPC 0 68414 96960 3 and best before date of BEST BEFORE 25JL04.
- Peeters Mushroom Farm Thick Slice Mushroom: Packaged in a labeled 10lb cardboard box.
No illnesses have been reported so far related to this issue. The contamination was discovered following testing by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency that detected Listeria monocytogenes in the fresh sliced mushrooms. Other products manufactured on the same line are also included in this recall.
