U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced that the Trump Administration will not enforce Biden-era directives related to diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and environmental policies. These policies were previously required for recipients of federal funds but are now deemed unnecessary by the current administration.
Duffy said, "It’s a new day in America, where common sense is in the driver’s seat. Our roads, rails, skies, and waters will be safer for it. The public wants to see their hard-earned dollars going towards safety and efficiency standards – not woke DEI or American Energy-killing ideas."
The decision follows President Donald Trump's executive orders aimed at eliminating policies adopted between January 20, 2021, and January 20, 2025. These include references to climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, racial equity, gender identity, and other related goals.
In a letter to grantees, Duffy clarified that the Department of Transportation (DOT) would no longer enforce these policies if they are inconsistent with current administration objectives. He said that any requirements not based on statute or regulation are considered null and void.
The letter also referenced several executive orders issued by President Trump focused on reforming government processes and restoring merit-based systems.
Earlier this year, Secretary Duffy reminded federal transportation funding recipients of their obligation to comply with federal law when receiving financial assistance.
