Senate Commerce Committee evaluates DOT safety agency nominees

In a recent Senate Commerce Committee nominations hearing, Chairman Ted Cruz commended President Trump and Secretary Duffy for prioritizing safety at the Department of Transportation (DOT). He emphasized the importance of leadership in DOT's safety agencies to ensure secure and efficient travel.

Sen. Cruz highlighted the qualifications of Mr. Derek Barrs, nominated to lead the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and Mr. Jonathan Morrison, nominated for Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). He also supported Mr. Paul Roberti as the nominee for Administrator of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).

Cruz expressed optimism about reaching an agreement with Ranking Member Maria Cantwell on PHMSA reauthorization.

During his prepared remarks, Sen. Cruz stated: “Americans want a transportation system that is fast, convenient, and reliable—but above all—safe." He praised President Trump and Secretary Duffy's commitment to safety at DOT.

Mr. Barrs' experience in law enforcement and familiarity with FMCSA were noted as assets for modernizing regulations in trucking and busing industries. Mr. Morrison's past role as NHTSA’s Chief Counsel and tech sector experience were cited as beneficial for advancing auto safety innovation.

Sen. Cruz acknowledged Mr. Roberti’s previous service at PHMSA as valuable for managing hazardous materials transport over pipelines.

The hearing aimed to evaluate these nominees' capabilities to uphold DOT's safety priorities under their potential leadership roles.
