A Guatemalan national, Cristian Aroldo Pineda Diaz, has been detained in federal custody following charges of assaulting a federal law enforcement officer. The announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom. Diaz, who entered the U.S. without inspection in 2006, is currently awaiting trial on felony domestic assault charges and for violating a protective order in Rhode Island state court.
According to court documents, the incident occurred on July 15, 2025. ICE Enforcement and Removal officers, along with a DEA agent and a Deputy U.S. Marshal, approached Diaz under an immigration arrest warrant. In an attempt to evade arrest, Diaz allegedly tackled the DEA agent, causing serious injury. The struggle resulted in injuries to other officers as well.
Court records show that Diaz was previously arrested on February 5, 2023, for domestic breaking and entering and other related charges. A no-contact order was issued against him at that time. However, on February 16, 2023, he allegedly violated this order by contacting the complainant and engaging in further aggressive behavior.
Assistant U.S Attorney G. Michael Seaman is prosecuting the federal assault case while the investigation was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America which aims to address illegal immigration and combat transnational criminal organizations.
It should be noted that a criminal complaint is merely an accusation; defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
