A Kansas tax preparer has been sentenced to 36 months in prison for filing false income tax returns that resulted in a tax loss exceeding $1.5 million to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Court documents reveal that Hophine Bwosinde, 61, from Lenexa, pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and assisting in fraud and false statements.

Between 2018 and 2022, Bwosinde operated his tax preparation business by submitting fraudulent tax returns for his clients. He either exaggerated legitimate business expenses or claimed losses for non-existent businesses. Additionally, Bwosinde falsely reported negative income on client returns. This led to significant underreporting of incomes to the IRS, resulting in reduced taxes owed by clients or refunds they were not entitled to receive.

The case was investigated by IRS Criminal Investigation.

Former Trial Attorney Erika V. Suhr of the Tax Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Huschka for the District of Kansas handled the prosecution.
