Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson announced the sentencing of Joshua Hogan, a 36-year-old New Orleans resident, for federal gun charges. Hogan was sentenced on July 8, 2025, by United States District Judge Brandon S. Long after pleading guilty to a six-count Superseding Bill of Information.
Hogan faced multiple charges related to the distribution and possession of fentanyl and firearm offenses. Counts One and Two charged him with distribution of fentanyl under Title 21, United States Code, Sections 841(a)(1) and 841(b)(1)(C). Counts Three and Four involved similar charges under Sections 841(a)(1) and 841(b)(1)(B). Count Five charged him with possession with intent to distribute fentanyl under Sections 841(a)(1) and 841(b)(1)(C), while Count Six involved being a felon in possession of a firearm/ammunition under Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(8).
Hogan received a sentence of 66 months imprisonment for all six counts, which will be served concurrently. He will also undergo supervised release for four years—three years for Counts One, Two, Five, and Six; four years for Counts Three and Four—served concurrently. Additionally, he must pay a $600 mandatory special assessment fee.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) identified Hogan as part of Operation Big Easy in August 2023. The ATF arranged several controlled purchases from Hogan involving substances that tested positive for heroin and fentanyl.
On October 18, 2023, the ATF executed an arrest warrant at Hogan's residence on Lapeyrouse Street where they found additional drugs and firearms.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), aiming to reduce violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson commended the efforts of the ATF in this case which was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Dawkins.
