House committee warns against Nvidia AI chip exports to China

Chairman John Moolenaar of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party has issued a warning about the potential risks to U.S. national security posed by exporting advanced NVIDIA AI chips to China. He urged the Commerce Department to implement strong guardrails to prevent such exports.

In a related effort, members of Congress have requested that D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser end sister-city relationships with regimes like China, Cuba, and Iran due to concerns over malign influence.

Chairman Moolenaar and Senator Rick Scott are pressing the SEC and PCAOB for explanations regarding the continued access of Chinese companies with opaque governance structures to U.S. capital markets.

The committee is also urging the FBI to halt certifications for Chinese surveillance equipment that could threaten American privacy and national security. In addition, Chairman Moolenaar has called for sanctions against Hong Kong Police Commissioner Joe Chow Yat-ming due to his role in repressing freedom in Hong Kong.

Lawmakers have raised concerns about scams linked to the CCP appearing on Google platforms, demanding swift action from the company. The committee is also working with bipartisan leaders to stop illegal acquisition of advanced U.S. AI chips by China through smuggling networks.

Chairman Moolenaar led a bipartisan roundtable discussing solutions for U.S. medicine shortages and reducing reliance on Chinese pharmaceutical ingredients. He also co-sponsored two acts targeting Hong Kong's political influence: H.R. 2661 requiring certification of CCP-controlled offices in the U.S., and H.R. 733 which seeks sanctions against complicit Hong Kong officials.

Other legislative actions include Rep. Neal Dunn's Secure U.S. Leadership in Space Act, aimed at boosting U.S. spaceports' ability to attract private investment and innovation, helping maintain America's edge over China in space exploration.

Additionally, several funding bills were passed focusing on maritime readiness, nuclear deterrence, defunding PRC-linked institutions while supporting Taiwan, promoting domestic critical mineral mining, reviving DOJ’s China Initiative, and addressing fentanyl enforcement among other issues related to countering China's global influence.

Recent hearings addressed issues such as breaking China's control over critical mineral supply chains and examining drone threats posed by China's growing export of surveillance technology.

Newsworthy items include warnings about Chinese influence over the Panama Canal and calls for an urgent review of DJI drones amid espionage concerns tied to Chinese scholarship programs at major colleges.
