John Woodbury, a 35-year-old resident of Roswell, Georgia, has been sentenced to 17 months in prison for transmitting threats against former FBI Director Christopher Wray. The sentencing follows Woodbury's guilty plea to charges of interstate commerce threats.
U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg emphasized the seriousness of such threats: "My office has zero tolerance for threats against law enforcement officers," he stated. He further remarked on the broader implications of these actions, noting that threatening public servants undermines societal foundations.
FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Paul Brown highlighted the importance of protecting public servants: "The functioning of our democracy requires that our country’s public servants be able to do their jobs without fearing for their lives."
The case stems from a message Woodbury posted on June 7, 2023, on 4chan.org, where he threatened violence against Wray and included his purported home address. In his post, Woodbury incited others with violent rhetoric directed at Wray and his family.
United States District Judge Sarah E. Geraghty handed down the sentence earlier today, which includes three years of supervised release following imprisonment. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
