Leah B. Foley United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts | Department of Justice
A Guatemalan national residing unlawfully in New Bedford has been sentenced in federal court in Boston for reentering the United States after deportation. Mario Lopez, 35, received a sentence of time served, approximately four months, and two years of supervised release from U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper. Following his sentence, Lopez will face deportation proceedings.
In May 2025, Lopez admitted guilt to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. Previously deported on December 8, 2010, following an assault conviction in Maryland, Lopez attempted to return to the United States twice in 2022 but was denied entry both times. He later managed to reenter the country illegally on an unspecified date.
Lopez's arrest history includes being taken into custody by local law enforcement in Westport on an open warrant in November 2023. Further arrests occurred in March 2024 and December 2024 in New Bedford for various offenses including unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and operating under the influence of liquor.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director for Boston's U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations. Assistant U.S. Attorney John J. Reynolds prosecuted the case.
