U.S. seeks forfeiture of over $1.7 million in cryptocurrency tied to ransomware

The United States has filed a civil complaint in the Northern District of Texas to seek forfeiture of cryptocurrency valued at over $1.7 million, which was seized by the Dallas FBI in April 2025. Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Nancy E. Larson announced the filing on July 24, 2025.

According to the complaint, authorities seized 20.2891382 Bitcoin from a specific cryptocurrency address on April 15, 2025. The value of the seized cryptocurrency has since increased to more than $2.4 million. The complaint alleges that these funds are connected to illegal activities such as money laundering and extortion linked to ransomware attacks involving damage to protected computers.

The investigation traced the cryptocurrency to an address allegedly associated with a member of the Chaos ransomware group known as “Hors.” This group is believed to have conducted ransomware attacks targeting victims both within the Northern District of Texas and elsewhere.

The civil action is being pursued under Case No. 3:25-CV-01920-K. The Dallas FBI was responsible for executing the seizure.
