Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she met with President Javier Milei, Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein, and Minister of National Security Patricia Bullrich. The visit focused on beginning the process for Argentina to rejoin the Visa Waiver Program, which is expected to make travel between the United States and Argentina easier.
During her trip, Secretary Noem signed a memorandum of cooperation related to the Security Alliance for Fugitive Enforcement. This agreement aims to improve the sharing of criminal history information between the two countries and has played a role in returning criminals to their home countries for prosecution. In addition, a letter of intent was signed regarding the adoption of an Electronic Nationality Verification program in Argentina. This program is designed to speed up the removal process for Argentine nationals who are in the United States without legal status.
“It’s been a privilege to witness the beauty of Argentina and the rich culture that shapes its people and country,” Secretary Noem said. “Thank you, President Milei, Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein, and Minister of National Security Patricia Bullrich, for your partnership in strengthening our shared security efforts and for so generously welcoming us.”
Secretary Noem also became the first U.S. cabinet official to visit Campo De Mayo, one of Argentina’s largest military institutions. Campo De Mayo houses several important units such as the Military Police School and Army Intelligence Battalion.
