U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Hidalgo Port of Entry seized over $1 million worth of cocaine during an enforcement action on July 26. The incident took place at the Hidalgo International Bridge, where officers referred a 2020 Renault Oroch for further inspection.
During the secondary inspection, a CBP canine alerted to the presence of narcotics. Officers then used nonintrusive imaging technology, which revealed irregularities inside the vehicle. A physical search led to the discovery of 30 packages containing a total of 34.90 kilograms (76.94 pounds) of suspected cocaine concealed within the vehicle.
The estimated street value of the seized drugs is $1,027,316. Both the narcotics and the vehicle were taken into custody by CBP. Special agents from Homeland Security Investigations have begun a criminal investigation into the matter.
Port Director Carlos Rodriguez commented on the seizure: “This substantial cocaine seizure reflects the strong dedication of our officers to safeguarding the border, as well as their skillful use of experience and technology.”
CBP describes itself as America’s largest law enforcement organization and emphasizes its role in protecting U.S. borders through various means, including advanced technology and collaboration with other agencies.
