Senate confirms Susan Monarez as CDC Director after close vote

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Dr. Susan Monarez as the new Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with a vote of 51 to 47. Her nomination had previously passed through the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee by a margin of 12 to 11.

Senator Bill Cassidy, chair of the HELP Committee, commented on the confirmation. “America needs a CDC Director who will reform the agency and work to restore public trust in health institutions,” said Dr. Cassidy. “With decades of proven experience as a public health official, Dr. Monarez is ready to take on this challenge and I look forward to working with her.”
