New York man pleads guilty to drug charges in Franklin County

A New York resident has admitted in federal court to possessing heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine base with the intent to distribute them in Franklin County, Maine.

Court documents state that the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office began investigating suspected drug trafficking from a residence in Avon. In July 2020, law enforcement executed a search warrant at the location and found Oscarlin Peguero Ortiz, 27, inside. Authorities seized about 85 grams of a mixture containing heroin and fentanyl, as well as 40 grams of crack cocaine. Additional items recovered included digital scales, drug paraphernalia, and more than $8,000 in cash.

Ortiz could face up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $1 million, and supervised release for at least three years and possibly up to life. Sentencing will take place after the U.S. Probation Office completes a presentence investigative report. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge who will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines along with other statutory factors.

The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Maine State Police, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
