U.S. Attorney’s Office joins community groups for National Night Out events

Federal prosecutors and staff from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina will participate in National Night Out events on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. The office will join local community organizers, neighborhoods, and law enforcement partners at several locations including Charlotte’s West Boulevard Neighborhood Coalition, the Hidden Valley Community Association, Stumpton Park in Matthews, and Kenilworth Forest in Asheville.

National Night Out is an annual event that aims to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and communities across the United States. Held on the first Tuesday of August in most areas, it encourages collaboration to help make neighborhoods safer. The initiative was created in 1984 with support from the Bureau of Justice Assistance under the U.S. Department of Justice and is run by the National Association of Town Watch, a nonprofit organization.

During these events, representatives from the U.S. Attorney’s Office plan to engage with residents by answering questions and sharing information about federal public safety initiatives.

U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson stated: “Our communities are safer when law enforcement and neighborhoods work together to prevent and address crime. That’s the point of National Night Out, and we are proud to join our law enforcement partners and communities across the district on this special night.”

Local law enforcement agencies coordinate National Night Out activities along with trained volunteers. Events often include block parties, cookouts, festivals, parades, safety demonstrations, seminars, youth activities, and visits from emergency personnel. Organizers say these gatherings show that neighbors are united in their efforts to keep their communities safe.
