Bronx man charged with slashing USPS mail carrier faces federal assault charge

Jay Clayton, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York | Department of Justice

A Bronx resident, John Garcia, has been arrested and charged with assaulting a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier in the Bronx on July 16, 2025. The announcement was made by Jay Clayton, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Edward Gallashaw, Acting Inspector in Charge of the New York Division of the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS). Garcia appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Lehrburger.

“John Garcia allegedly attacked a uniformed USPS carrier who was delivering the mail,” said U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton. “Attacks like this are senseless and threaten the good people and systems we rely on every day. They will not be tolerated.”

Edward Gallashaw added, “The Postal Inspection Service takes matters involving the safety and well-being of postal service employees as a top priority. Let it be clear, we will investigate and identify anyone who commits a criminal act against a USPS letter carrier. I’d like to thank our local law enforcement partners and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York for their constant assistance.”

According to allegations in the complaint, at around 12:50 p.m., Garcia is accused of attacking an on-duty USPS mail carrier with a sharp object, resulting in serious injuries that required hospitalization.

Garcia faces one count of assaulting an officer of the United States using a deadly or dangerous weapon. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison; however, sentencing will ultimately be determined by a judge.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Grossinger from the General Crimes Unit.

Authorities emphasized that these charges are accusations and Garcia is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
