A Bronx resident, Carlos Rivas, has been arrested and charged with possession of child pornography following an investigation by federal authorities. The announcement was made by Jay Clayton, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Rivas was presented before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Lehrburger after his arrest.
According to the allegations in the complaint, Rivas worked at a school in the Bronx during the summer of 2024. Authorities allege that from July 14, 2024, through August 15, 2024, he possessed hundreds of images and videos depicting child pornography on his account with an electronic service provider’s file storage service. Some material was reportedly uploaded from an Internet Protocol address linked to the school where he worked.
“As alleged, Carlos Rivas possessed hundreds of images and videos of child pornography while working at a Bronx school,” said U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton. “Child pornography has no place anywhere in our society, particularly anywhere connected to a school. Our devoted prosecutors and partners will unrelentingly fight this scourge.”
Rivas, age 22, is charged with one count of possession of child pornography involving prepubescent minors and minors under the age of 12. The charge carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison if convicted. Sentencing decisions will be made by a judge according to federal guidelines.
Jay Clayton acknowledged Homeland Security Investigations for their work on the case. The prosecution is being managed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita Maxwell from the General Crimes Unit.
The charges against Rivas are accusations at this stage; he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
