Farmington man sentenced for $1.7M embezzlement scheme targeting small business employer

A Farmington man has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison after admitting to embezzling nearly $1.7 million from his small business employer. Timothy Sean Edgar, 44, was also ordered by U.S. District Court Judge Howard C. Nielson, Jr. to serve three years of supervised release and pay $1,778,251 in restitution.

Court records show that Edgar’s scheme began in 2021 and continued until October 2024. He used his position at the company to open a fraudulent sales channel on a well-known online marketplace. By accessing the vendor portal with his work credentials, Edgar redirected Automated Clearing House payments into his personal bank account. He later attempted to cover up the theft by making payments back to the company using his own credit card.

Acting U.S. Attorney Felice John Viti for the District of Utah commented on the case: “This case is an example of a defendant who used the victim’s trust against them,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Felice John Viti of the District of Utah. “Mr. Edgar took advantage of a small business by building a strong relationship with his employer and gained access and control that he then used to perpetrate his fraud scheme. The U.S. Attorney’s Office and our law enforcement partners will not tolerate fraud in our communities, and we will continue to investigate and prosecute fraudsters and seek justice for victims of these crimes.”

The investigation involved several agencies working together: the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation division (IRS-CI), FBI Salt Lake City Field Office, and North Salt Lake City Police Department.

Prosecution was handled by Assistant United States Attorneys Mark E. Woolf and Jacob J. Strain from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah.
