Kevin Freeman, a 20-year-old resident of Washington D.C., was sentenced to five years in prison for robbing an elderly man at knifepoint on a Metro train. The sentencing took place in Superior Court, with Judge Jennifer Di Toro presiding.

Freeman had pleaded guilty on May 5, 2025, to one count of robbery while armed. In addition to the 60-month sentence, he will also serve five years of supervised release. Judge Di Toro ordered that this sentence be served consecutively to a probation revocation sentence from a separate case in which Freeman was convicted of another Metro robbery in June 2024. This results in a total incarceration period of 90 months. Judge Di Toro declined to apply the Youth Rehabilitation Act due to Freeman’s recent conviction for similar conduct.

According to evidence presented by the government, the incident occurred at approximately 10:56 p.m. on January 16, 2025. Freeman boarded an orange line Metro train wearing a face mask and sat across from his victim, a 72-year-old man returning home from work. After other passengers left the train, Freeman moved next to the victim and demanded money while brandishing a large knife. A struggle ensued; although the victim resisted for about two minutes, Freeman ultimately stole an iPhone valued at $800 and cash before fleeing.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the sentencing along with Chief Michael Anzallo of the Metro Transit Police Department. "In announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Pirro and Chief Anzallo commended the work of those who investigated the case from the Metro Transit Police Department, particularly Detective Adrian Rodriguez. They also acknowledged the work of Assistant U.S. Attorney Eliot Folsom, who prosecuted the case."
