A New Jersey man has pleaded guilty in federal court to failing to report his arrival and present himself for inspection at the Calais international port of entry.
Court documents show that on July 1, 2025, Jason Brenner, 52, drove a vehicle out of the United States into Canada. After interacting briefly with Canadian immigration officials, Brenner turned his vehicle around and headed back toward the U.S. Instead of stopping at the Calais port of entry for inspection, he entered the country by driving in the outbound lane against traffic, bypassing standard inspection procedures. Authorities say that after a high-speed pursuit in which Brenner exceeded 100 mph, he crashed his vehicle. He was later found in nearby woods carrying a loaded firearm, two loaded magazines, and wearing body armor. Another loaded firearm was located inside his vehicle.
Brenner could face up to one year in prison, a fine as high as $100,000, and up to one year of supervised release. Sentencing will take place after a presentence investigative report is completed by the U.S. Probation Office. A federal magistrate judge will determine any sentence based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory considerations.
The investigation was led by U.S. Customs and Border Protection with help from U.S. Border Patrol and police departments in Baileyville and Indian Township.
