The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced $175 million in funding through the Federal Highway Administration’s Ferry Boat Program to support ferry services in 35 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. The funding aims to improve and expand ferry operations, providing communities with more cost-effective travel options.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy stated, “We make life easier when we make the transportation of people and products smoother. In places like Alaska, our maritime highways are critical arteries for commuters and regional supply chains. From our skies to our roads, rail networks, and waterways, America is building again thanks to President Trump.”

Funds from this program can be used for constructing and operating ferry boats as well as developing terminals and maintenance facilities. This includes both ferries that carry vehicles and those that transport only passengers on public routes where bridges or tunnels are not practical.

The Ferry Boat Program addresses mobility challenges by supporting projects in regions lacking alternative transportation methods and where there is high passenger demand. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), these improvements are expected to boost ridership and reduce congestion on nearby highways.

State Departments of Transportation will distribute the federal highway formula funds to eligible ferry operators for purchasing vessels, upgrading facilities, covering operational expenses, designing new routes, constructing additional infrastructure, and acquiring necessary land if eligibility criteria are met.

A detailed breakdown of how funds will be allocated among recipients is available online.
