U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, who serves as Chair of the Senate Small Business Committee, has named Dutchman’s Store in Van Buren County as her Small Business of the Week. This recognition is part of Ernst’s ongoing effort during the 119th Congress to highlight a small business from each of Iowa’s 99 counties.
“Since 1985, Dutchman’s Store has been a staple of southeast Iowa, offering everything from soup to hay,” said Chair Ernst. “One stitch at a time, they’ve sewed a legacy that honors their commitment to rural values. This small business is a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of rural America.”
Dutchman’s Store was founded by Clair and Virginia Zimmerman in 1985 and reflects Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. The store, now operated in Cantril with assistance from their sons, has expanded into a 50,000 square-foot retail location providing groceries, sewing supplies, clothing, and operates its own café.
Ernst plans to continue this initiative by recognizing additional small businesses across Iowa through her Small Business of the Week award.
