U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in San Antonio has placed an immigration detainer on Jose Fredi Rivera-Mejia, also known as Wilfredo Lopez, a 44-year-old Honduran national. Rivera-Mejia was arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following an incident on August 10.

San Antonio Police responded late at night to reports of a disturbance. According to authorities, Rivera-Mejia allegedly produced a handgun, shot multiple victims, and fled the scene with three children in his vehicle. Officers located him soon after and arrested him without harm to the children. He faces charges of murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; additional charges may follow as two victims remain in critical condition.

“Criminal aliens present in the U.S. pose a significant threat to our public safety and our citizens,” said Enforcement and Removal Operations San Antonio Field Office Director Miguel Vergara. “We will continue to do everything in our power to prevent tragedies like this from occurring and working with our local law enforcement partners so criminals are not released back into our communities.”

ICE records show that Rivera-Mejia has been removed from the United States three times before. His first removal followed an arrest for assault in 2009, after which he was ordered deported by an immigration judge in January 2010 and sent back to Honduras in February 2010. He later reentered the country illegally; ICE encountered him again after his arrest for driving while intoxicated in December 2012, leading to another removal in January 2013.

In July 2015, U.S. Border Patrol apprehended Rivera-Mejia near Eagle Pass, Texas, where he admitted entering the country illegally days earlier. After being transferred to ICE custody and convicted under federal law for illegal entry, he was deported again on August 10, 2015.

Authorities state that Rivera-Mejia most recently entered the United States at an unknown time or location.

The public is encouraged to report suspected violations of immigration law or other suspicious activity by calling 866-DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423) or submitting information through ICE’s online tip form.
