U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Del Rio International Bridge in Texas detained a 26-year-old U.S. citizen on August 8 after he allegedly assaulted and resisted officers during an inspection.

According to CBP, the incident began when the man arrived from Mexico as the driver of a personal vehicle and refused officer requests to surrender his cell phone. The individual then reportedly made physical contact with officers, resisted arrest, and impeded them from continuing their inspection. Officers secured the traveler and placed him in a detention cell.

“Incident of this nature underscore the challenges our officers face while performing their duties,” said Port Director Liliana Flores, Del Rio Port of Entry. “We will take all necessary actions to ensure the safety of our officers and to hold those who commit such acts accountable.”

Homeland Security Investigations special agents arrested the man and have started a criminal investigation. The CBP Office of Professional Responsibility is also reviewing the incident.

CBP describes itself as America’s largest law enforcement organization, with more than 65,000 personnel working to protect U.S. borders by facilitating lawful travel and trade while ensuring national security through various measures.
