Sean Charles Dunn, 37, has been charged in U.S. District Court for allegedly assaulting a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer by shouting insults and throwing a wrapped sandwich at the officer. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.
Dunn, who previously worked at the Department of Justice, was terminated from his position by Attorney General Pam Bondi following the incident. He faces one felony count of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers and employees of the United States. Dunn appeared before federal Magistrate Judge G. Michael Harvey and was released on his own recognizance.
Attorney General Bondi commented on the matter: “If you touch any law enforcement officer, we will come after you,” said Attorney General Bondi in a post on the social media platform X. “I just learned that this defendant worked at the Department of Justice — NO LONGER. Not only is he FIRED, he has been charged with a felony. This is an example of the Deep State we have been up against for seven months as we work to refocus DOJ. You will NOT work in this administration while disrespecting our government and law enforcement.”
U.S. Attorney Pirro added: “Let me be clear, if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, be certain we will come after you with the full weight of the law. Our officers have a job to do, and they should not be abused in the process,” said U.S. Attorney Pirro. “This alleged assault is no joke – it’s a serious crime, and those who think otherwise will learn just how gravely mistaken they are.”
According to charging documents, Metro Transit Police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection were patrolling in Washington D.C.’s 2000 block of 14th Street NW around 11 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 10 when Dunn approached an officer, shouted insults including “F you! You fing fascists! Why are you here? I don’t want you in my city!” and then threw a sub-style sandwich at him, hitting him in the chest.
The incident was captured on video by an observer using Instagram.
After attempting to flee on foot, Dunn was apprehended by police officers. While being processed at Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District station, he admitted to an officer: “I did it. I threw a sandwich.”
The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the case, which is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
