The U.S. Department of Labor has announced an additional award of over $1.3 million to continue employment and training services for workers affected by automotive industry layoffs in Michigan.
In September 2023, the department provided Michigan with a National Dislocated Worker Grant of up to $4 million, starting with an initial allocation of $1,333,333. This funding is intended to help displaced workers throughout the state who have been impacted by job losses in the automotive sector.
With this new award, total funding for the project has reached $2,666,666 so far. The grant is managed by the department’s Employment and Training Administration and will enable the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity to continue offering services to eligible individuals across all 83 counties in Michigan.
"National Dislocated Worker Grants provide a state or local board with funding for direct services and assistance in areas experiencing a major economic dislocation event that leads to workforce needs exceeding available resources," according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
The grants are supported by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014. They are designed to offer financial assistance when significant economic disruptions lead to workforce challenges beyond what existing resources can address.
