An El Salvadoran national residing in Carrollton has been indicted for unlawfully returning to the United States, according to a statement from Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs of the Eastern District of Texas.
David Antonio Lopez-Hernandez, 43, was charged by a federal grand jury with illegal reentry after being previously deported. The indictment states that Lopez-Hernandez was found in the Eastern District of Texas on April 18, 2025.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative led by the Department of Justice that coordinates resources to address illegal immigration and target transnational criminal organizations. The operation brings together efforts from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
If convicted, Lopez-Hernandez could face up to two years in federal prison and subsequent deportation.
Homeland Security Investigations is leading the investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Stevan Buys is prosecuting the case.
"A federal indictment is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law," according to the release.
