Mexican national indicted in Texas for illegal reentry after deportation

A federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Texas has indicted Jose Luis Piedra-Sosa, a 51-year-old Mexican national residing illegally in Denton County, for illegal reentry after deportation. The indictment alleges that Piedra-Sosa was found on June 23, 2025, within the district following his previous removal from the United States.

The announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs for the Eastern District of Texas. The case is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative led by the Department of Justice to address illegal immigration and related criminal activity. According to officials, Operation Take Back America brings together resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) to target cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and violent crime.

If convicted, Piedra-Sosa could face up to two years in federal prison followed by deportation.

Homeland Security Investigations is conducting the investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Stevan Buys is prosecuting the case.

“A federal indictment is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law,” according to the statement released by authorities.
