A Waterloo man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for his role in a drug conspiracy. Adis Vretenarevic, 30, pleaded guilty on March 21, 2025, to one count of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.
Court records show that between August 2022 and January 2024, Vretenarevic participated in distributing large amounts of marijuana intended for further distribution within the Waterloo area. He also deposited thousands of dollars in drug proceeds into a bank account linked to the drug trafficking organization. At the time of these offenses, Vretenarevic was already under federal supervision following a previous conviction for possession of a firearm by a drug user.
Chief Judge C.J. Williams of the United States District Court handed down the sentence on August 18, 2025, in Cedar Rapids. In addition to the 60-month prison term, Vretenarevic will serve five years of supervised release after completing his incarceration. Federal law does not allow parole.
Vretenarevic remains in the custody of the United States Marshal until he is transferred to a federal facility.
