Major U.S. hospitals halt pediatric gender transition services after new federal directives

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, has announced that several major hospital systems and health providers in the United States have stopped offering gender transition services to minors. Cassidy attributed this development to recent actions by President Trump and ongoing efforts by congressional Republicans.

“President Trump is delivering on his promise to protect children from dangerous gender transitions,” said Dr. Cassidy. “As chair of the HELP Committee, I will continue to work with the President to stop the chemical and surgical mutilation of our children.”

Earlier in 2025, President Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to prevent children from undergoing chemical or surgical castration as part of gender transition procedures. Following this directive, the Department of Justice issued more than 20 subpoenas to doctors and clinics performing these procedures on minors.

In June, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services finalized a rule prohibiting insurance issuers governed by Essential Health Benefit requirements from covering sex trait modification procedures.

Cassidy has stated he is leading Senate Republicans in ensuring compliance with these new federal rules among health care providers and insurers.

He is also conducting investigations into organizations such as the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), questioning their standards of care for minors seeking gender transition services. According to Cassidy, WPATH’s guidelines are used by many providers and insurers when determining care and coverage for gender-related medical procedures. The Department of Health and Human Services has instructed health providers not to follow WPATH’s treatment guidelines due to concerns over their scientific validity.

Additionally, Cassidy is advancing legislation titled the No Subsidies for Gender Transition Procedures Act. This bill would bar federal funding for transition procedures through Medicaid, Medicare, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and plans under the Affordable Care Act. It would also disallow medical expense tax deductions related to such procedures.
